At six months in to cycle touring we’ve had some experience using our equipment. Months ago we posted a three part series on how we were going to handle water storage and transportation while travelling. Here’s a quick shakedown on how our choices have fared so far:

After a wonderful night’s sleep at Refugio State Park, we rode through Goleta then on to Santa Barbara for the evening. We couldn’t help but stop to window shop as we made our way to the Agave Inn, a sweet little place, which we strategically picked due to its proximity to our scheduled appointment with world-renowned and master wheel builder, John Jones. With our rears firmly planted in a hotel room in Lompoc for a couple of weeks, we’ve had lots of time to tackle tasks that aren’t as easy to take care of when cycling and on the road. On our way out of Oceano, we stopped at an old train car converted to diner to check email and to firm up plans with warmshowers.org hosts, then headed down old Cabrillo Highway (a.k.a. Hwy1) toward Santa Maria. About half way in to our route I heard the distinct *ping* of a spoke breaking. I cringed, dismounted, and walked my bicycle to the nearest driveway, which [Read More…] 
It was raining when we left Ragged Point but within the hour we were dry and peeling clothing off as it warmed up. The weather remained finicky throughout the day, bursting into occasional spritzing and then just as quickly disappearing. As we cycled away from the secluded shores of Big Sur toward San Simeon, the road faded into more relaxed, rolling hills. 
Our time in Berkeley allowed us to catch up with friends, take care of bicycle maintenance and equipment warranty issues, and to recover from an unexpected setback. Spending time with friends Jason, Sujatha, & Sathya was simply wonderful! We had many days and nights filled with engaging conversation, laughter, board games, story-telling and bicycling.
