We had a few bumps in the road during weeks 18, 19 & 20 of building our tiny house on a trailer, two of them being exhaustion and lack of motivation. Much rain, including Tropical storm Irene, and a cold snap, in which our evening temperatures dropped close to freezing, shook us out of our lull. We’re working hard to get everything wrapped up so that we can ride out of town before there is snow on the ground!
We spent our time finishing up some landscaping around the house, prepping the underside of the trailer for the installation of Masonite, creating outside storage space, finishing off the entryway ceiling and porch, and installing a removable deck off the tongue of the trailer. We’re really happy with how the house is coming together. As you can imagine, we’re starting to regret having to leave it, but the regret doesn’t linger, as we know we’d have to finish the interior if we were to stay!
Going into the end of week 22, we spent the last two weeks installing, caulking & waterproofing the Masonite panels, installing gutters, finishing off the beds around the house, closing off a section of our fencing between the wood store and the cedar fencing we installed last fall, and building & installing a real set of stairs off the porch. Rain has often delayed our work outdoors so we’ve been spending a lot of time indoors organizing and packing away supplies and tools that we no longer need.
Yesterday we had our “Leave No Trace Open House Farewell Party”. It was a joy to show off the house that we built with our own two hands and to be able to relax and lift a glass in celebration of its completion (at least of the exterior). We feel truly blessed to have so many wonderful, supportive friends and family in our lives.
Today, in between showers, we hung curtains, finished storing and organizing our tools, and completed last minute maintenance tasks on the house. Our goal was to finish packing and to start our bicycling adventure on Friday, September 30th (that’s tomorrow!), but we’re still waiting to receive some last minute shipments of goods for our trip, so we most likely will leave a day or two later, depending upon when they arrive.
